The press hardeningprocess enables production of metal parts with up tothree times higher strength than regular steel – in onesingle press operation.By forming the hot boron steel blanks and quickly coolingthem in the press tool, the finished part obtains a hard-to-beat relationship between strength and weight. Hightemperatures and narrow time margins mean that all ofthe equipment in the process must optimally interact toachieve good results. In AP&T's press hardening lines, theentire process is controlled by the same control system –from blank feeding and heating to forming and unloading.And we take full responsibility for ensuring everythingworks – a concept that we call One ResponsiblePartner®.AP&T supplies complete press hardening lines to sub-contractors, Tier 1 manufacturers and OEMs, primarilyin the automotive industry. Page 3:AP&T • PRESS HARDENING12 3574From cold blanks to hot parts– we are with you the entire wayBlank feedingA highly reliable and accessible line presupposes agood start. The blanks are separated, checked andcentered in the destacker before being fed into thefurnace. It is also possible to mark batches or punchholes in the blanks.FurnaceThe material is heated to austenite temperaturerange in electric or gas-heated furnaces. They canbe traditional furnaces or space-saving MultilayerFurnaces (MLF).The blanks are heated up to 930°C (approx.1700 °F) before being unloaded from the furnace.The furnace can be equipped with a controlled gasatmosphere to prevent the blanks from scaling.Press feedingSpeed and stability are determining factors at hightemperatures and with narrow time margins. TheSpeedFeeder's gripper system ensures quick andprecise positioning of the blank before being fedinto the press. Full synchronization between thecontrol systems results in the shortest possiblehandling time.PressWhen the press tool closes, the 930 °C (approx.1700 °F) hot blank is formed, and high pressureis applied during the cooling process. The formingmethod requires a hydraulic press and high pressforces to ensure full contact between the tool andblank, which results in effective cooling. The presscan be equipped with hydraulic and pneumaticoutlets for tool functions.Forming toolThe press tool must be able to form hot blanks andwork with large temperature differences. For thisreason, the tools have components such as an inte-grated, water cooling system. Because of this, thereare extremely high requirements when it comes tomaterial selection and tool design.UnloadingQuick and safe. AP&T’s automation range ofSpeedFeeders and transfer systems guaranteesquick unloading from the press and, naturally, canwithstand the hot environment. Unloading on aconveyer or stacking the parts on a pallet.Control systemFull control over the process with monitoring of allfunctions is particularly important in a productionwhere cycle time is not only important to productiv-ity but above all to product quality. AP&T’s centralcontrol system ensures rapid product changeover ofthe production line.1425367
